NFL 2008 Week 17 Picks

The last week of the 2008 regular season has arrived.

When the clock hits :00 at the end of the Chargers-Broncos game Sunday night, it will mark the end to one of the most intoxicating, bizarre, and delirious seasons ever.

We saw players rise from the grave and look young again. Obscure bench warmers and rookie projects rose to the occasion when called upon and looked like true veterans. There were teams that exceeded expectations while others destroyed them. Chemistries were toyed with due to injuries and off-field drama.

Let's take a look at the final slate of games for all 32 teams and what their status appears to be as the NFL approaches the door step of that crucial tour called The Playoffs.

- St. Louis Rams (2-13) at Atlanta Falcons (10-5): FOX, 1pm EST - The front office of the Rams is under construction which will more than likely include Jim Haslett being replaced. St. Louis needs serious upgrades on the field as well. The Falcons have been a fantastic story this season being led by a rookie QB in Matt Ryan and RB Michael Turner. Atlanta is in the playoffs but needs a win plus a Carolina loss to win the NFC South.

- Detroit Lions (0-15) at Green Bay Packers (5-10): FOX, 1pm EST - Since the 1970 NFL merger, only one team has had a winless season: Tampa Bay (0-14). Detroit beat that mark last week and looks to extend it vs. a Green Bay team that struggled in its first season under Aaron Rodgers. Rod Marinelli will probably get the axe.

- NY Giants (12-3) at Minnesota Vikings (9-6): FOX, 1pm EST - A win at home or a Chicago loss gives Minnesota the NFC North crown. A loss plus a Bears win at Houston knocks the Vikes out of the playoffs. All-but-forgotten Gus Frerotte did a great job keeping Minnesota in the mix of things, but if QB Tarvaris Jackson can't get the job done, then look for Minnesota to find a new QB in 2009. I think Plaxico is in the Giants' rear view mirror.

- Carolina Panthers (11-4) at New Orleans Saints (8-7): FOX, 1pm EST - A win over the Saints or a Falcons loss will give Carolina the NFC South crown and a first-round bye. New Orleans is out of the playoffs, but will want to defend the home turf where they are 6-1 this season. This could be the last game for Deuce McAllister in a Saints uniform.

- Chicago Bears (9-6) at Houston Texans (7-8): FOX, 1pm EST - Both teams feature dynamic rookie RB's (Matt Forte and Steve Slaton respectively) who have contributed greatly. The Texans have had a strong second half and would love to win the last game at home. Chicago needs a win and Vikings loss to claim the division. If they win while Dallas and Tampa loses, then the Bears get the last wild card spot.

- New England Patriots (10-5) at Buffalo Bills (7-8): CBS, 1pm EST - When Tom Brady went out for the year in Week 1, the sky appeared to fall. But, a lowly wanderer named Matt Cassel learned the ways of an NFL QB from Yoda Belichick and now has the Pats on the brink of the playoffs. They must win plus get a loss by Miami to win the AFC East or get a win and a Ravens loss to grab a wild card. I expect Cassel will be in high demand next season. Buffalo's Dick Jauron is on very thin ice which is cracking.

- Kansas City Chiefs (2-13) at Cincinnati Bengals (3-11-1): CBS, 1pm EST - When Chiefs GM Carl Peterson "resigned" eleven days ago, that pretty much spelled doom for Herm Edwards. KC's new GM has their work cut out for them. Meanwhile, Cincy will probably keep Marvin Lewis and chalk this season up as a loss due to vast injuries and no Carson Palmer.

- Tennessee Titans (13-2) at Indianapolis Colts (11-4): CBS, 1pm EST - Most of the starters of both teams will see little playing which can only mean one thing: Vince Young. These two teams very well could meet again in the playoffs and are very solid for next year. Kerry Collins was looking at Medicare benefits when he got called into action early this season and has done an exceptional job. Look for him to get a new contract.

- Cleveland Browns (4-11) at Pittsburgh Steelers (11-4): CBS, 1pm EST - Romeo Crennel will be fired Monday if not Sunday night. GM Phil Savage is probably gone too. Rebuilding is an understatement, but they do have a QB in place in Brady Quinn. The Steelers are a very dangerous contender in the playoffs and need to stay healthy.

- Oakland Raiders (4-11) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-6): CBS, 1pm EST - It's quite simple for Tampa. They must beat Oakland and then Philly beat Dallas if they want to lock up the final wild card spot. The Raiders are bound to kick Tom Cable to the curb since they like doing that to head coaches.

- Jacksonville Jaguars (5-10) at Baltimore Ravens (10-5): CBS, 4:15pm EST - What can you say about Baltimore? A rookie head coach and quarterback plus this black-n-blue defense have far exceeded expectations. A win at home vs. the disheartening Jags will lock up the final playoff spot in the AFC. Jacksonville should keep most of the team in tact but need to improve their defense and get some play makers at WR.

- Miami Dolphins (10-5) at NY Jets (9-6): CBS, 4:15pm EST - These two franchises have had remarkable years. The iconic Brett Favre comes out of retirement to lead the lowly Jets who jettisoned Chad Pennington paving the path for him to become Miami's QB. Coming off a 1-15 2007 season, Pennington has led the Dolphins to a possible division title and only Favre and the Jets stand in his way. A win by Miami nails the division. TheJets are in with a win and a New England loss. I expect Mangini and Favre to not be back next season if NY fails to make the playoffs.

- Washington Redskins (8-7) at San Francisco 49ers (6-9): FOX, 4:15pm EST - Not much to say here. The Skins started the year off very strong but faltered big time under rookie head coach Jim Zorn. In all fairness, Zorn will be back to prove that he needed a year to learn the position. San Fran head coach Mike Singletary is 4-4 since taking over for Mike Nolan and all reports are saying that he will become the permanent leader after Sunday.

- Dallas Cowboys (9-6) at Philadelphia Eagles (8-5-1): FOX, 4:15pm EST - Despite key injuries to star players, off-field distractions, and a humiliating loss last week in Texas Stadiums' finale, the Cowboys are close to making the playoffs. A win in Philly does it while the Eagles need a victory and a spirit of giving by other clubs to sneak in. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones swears that Wade Phillips isn't going anywhere regardless of Sunday's outcome. Andy Reid should be back but will be on a hot seat from Week 1if Philly loses.

- Seattle Seahawks (4-11) at Arizona Cardinals (8-7): FOX, 4:15pm EST - This is Mike Holmgren's last game as the head coach of the dismal Seahawks as Jim Mora Jr. will take over in 2009. It has been rumored that Holmgren may decide not to retire allowing him to be a free agent. The Cardinals have looked pretty bad the last two games (both losses) so expect Kurt Warner and Co. to treat this like a playoff game and look to build momentum leading into January.

- Denver Broncos (8-7) at San Diego Chargers (7-8): NBC, 8:15pm EST - Doesn't get much more plain that this. The winner wins the AFC West while the loser gets to watch the playoffs from home. Denver had a three game lead with three to play, but have lost their last two while San Diego won their last three in a row. Both coaches should be back next year as they look to upgrade the talent level especially on defense.

NFL 2008 Week 16 Picks

Observations from Week 15:

1. Patriots QB Matt Cassel played the game of his life vs. Oakland on the heels of his father dying the previous Monday. Sound familiar? I wonder if he got a call from Favre before deciding to play.

2. If New England and Miami wins the rest of their games and NY wins the AFC East, then Miami would win the wild card on tie-breakers. The Patriots could miss the playoffs at 11-5.

3. Giants RB Brandon Jacobs' injury woes have allowed the Plaxico mess to affect NY's chemistry. All Philly and Dallas had to do was stack the box and rush like hell and look what happened.

4. My choice for Coach of the Year is Miami's Tony Sparano.

5. Injuries to the Titan's DE Kyle Vanden Bosch and DT Albert Haynsworth along with the Giants' RB Brandon Jacobs and RT Kareem McKenzie could be a road hazard getting to the Super Bowl.

6. I get the feeling that Donovan McNabb laughed so hard that he literally turned red as he read the soap opera reports coming out of Dallas about T.O.

7. Coaches who I don't think can keep their jobs no matter how they finish is Cleveland's Romeo Crennel, KC's Herm Edwards, Buffalo's Dick Jauron, Detroit's Rod Marinelli, and St. Louis' Jim Haslett. For some reason, I think Marvin Lewis will stay in Cincy.

It's crunch time. The whole reason that NFL players show up for training camp in July is to be good enough to be able to play in January. Grasping momentum and shoving it in the coal stove of the team's steam engine is critical this time of year as teams look to hit their peak at just the right time.

This week is going to be very pivotal for several franchises. It's compiled of fierce divisional rivalries, excellent individual match-ups, and the end of an era. All together you get a week that will help shape up the playoff picture and begin to bring an end to one phenomenal 2008 regular season.

- Indianapolis Colts (10-4) at Jacksonville Jaguars (5-9): NFLN, 8:15pm EST, Thursday Night - Speaking of momentum, Indy has it and Jacksonville can't remember what it looks like.

- Baltimore Ravens (9-5) at Dallas Cowboys (9-5): NFLN, 8:15pm EST, Saturday Night - This battle is going to be as big as the hole in the Texas Stadium roof considering what's at stake in each club's playoff hunt. This will be the last regular season game in this hallowed dome so expect the crowd to be at its loudest. Dallas has never beaten the Ravens, and this will be Baltimore's first visit to The Temple...and last.

- Cincinnati Bengals (2-11) at Cleveland Browns (4-10): CBS, 1pm EST - A slapping contest between Ohio's finest.

- Pittsburgh Steelers (11-3) at Tennessee Titans (12-2): CBS, 1pm EST - The mantle of domination is now resting on the shoulders of the Steelers. Tennessee is still a force, but injuries and a dormant offense have plagued the Titans. They will probably meet again.

- Miami Dolphins (9-5) at Kansas City Chiefs (2-12): CBS, 1pm EST - Arrowhead Stadium can no longer strike fear in visiting teams, and it will no longer house GM Carl Peterson who resigned this week.

- San Diego Chargers (6-8) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-5): CBS, 1pm EST - Giving up 474 yards rushing and 5 TD's on 80 carries in the past two games makes it pretty easy for an opponent to put together their offensive game plan. San Diego and L.T. will look to extend their current win streak in December which is at 12.

- San Francisco 49ers (5-9) at St. Louis Rams (2-12): FOX, 1pm EST -It's going to be a heated and crazy finish to the season to see who will nail down the #2 spot in the 2009 NFL Draft. My pick is the Rams.

- New Orleans Saints (7-7) at Detroit Lions (0-16): FOX, 1pm EST - I think we all know who has sewn up #1.

- Arizona Cardinals (8-6) at New England Patriots (9-5): FOX, 1pm EST - The Cardinals have lost three of their last four games while the Pats have won 3 of their last 4. Arizona is also 0-4 this season on the East Coast while Matt Cassel is hot right now.

- Houston Texans (7-7) at Oakland Raiders (3-11): CBS, 4:05pm EST - Riding a four-game win streak for the first time in franchise history, Houston is turning heads as they streak towards a very strong 2008 finish. QB Matt Schaub and WR Andre Johnson are smoking, and the Texans defense is really coming together.

- Buffalo Bills (6-8) at Denver Broncos (8-6): CBS, 4:05pm EST - Last week, I know J.P. Losman looked like he had never played football before, but he won't need to rely on his arm that much vs. the Broncos' porous run defense.

- NY Jets (9-5) at Seattle Seahawks (3-11): CBS, 4:05pm EST - The forecast calls for freezing temps and a chance of snow -- perfect conditions for #4 to break NY's losing streak of 3 vs. West Coast teams this season.

- Atlanta Falcons (9-5) at Minnesota Vikings (9-5): FOX, 4:15pm EST - Despite the glory and praise heaped on Atlanta this year, this contest may not be that close. The Vikings are #1 vs. the run, and have a pretty good RB themselves who will be facing a run defense ranked 22nd. QB Tarvaris Jackson is stepping up his game and could be huge vs. Atlanta's 23rd-ranked pass defense.

- Philadelphia Eagles (8-5-1) at Washington Redskins (7-7): FOX, 4:15pm EST - Philly has quietly snuck into the playoff race and will stroll into FedEx Field to face a Redskins team that is in turmoil. Coach Jim Zorn proclaimed himself "the worst coach in America" and said he will re-evaluate his approach to football games. So will Daniel Snyder.

- Carolina Panthers (11-3) at NY Giants (11-3): NBC, 8:15pm EST - Where do you start? Eli Manning got pummeled vs. Dallas last week and doesn't get much of a break vs. the 9th-ranked pass rush in the NFL. Both teams have dynamic running attacks and effective passing games. The winner clinches the #1 seed and claims home field advantage throughout the playoffs. This is going to be a war so cancel any plans you have.

- Green Bay Packers (5-9) at Chicago Bears (8-6): ESPN, 8:30pm EST, MNF - These two teams have met more than any other two teams in NFL history. This will be their 176th meeting. Look for the Bears to maul the Packers very weak run defense and ride the waves of the Soldier Field crowd as they surge forward in the playoff hunt.

NFL 2008 Week 15 Picks

Observations from Week 14:

1. Cowboys fans have to remember that Tony Romo is still immature in some areas, and is going through growing pains. Let him grow. He'll be fine.

2. If I were assembling a defense, my first choice would be the Steeler's Troy Polamalu.

3. It's very conceivable that Miami could win the AFC East. What a story that would be.

4. Is it just me, or does it feel weird that Peyton Manning and the Colts aren't getting a lot of press this late in the season? They're 9-4 and have won 7 in a row.

5. If I had to pick T.O., Clinton Portis, or Chad "Ocho Cinco" Johnson to be on my team, I would pick T.O. any day of the week.

6. I think Mike Singletary will loose the "interim" label after the season and become the head coach of San Francisco.

7. John Harbaugh of Baltimore and Mike Smith of Atlanta should be the front-runners for Coach of the Year. They're rookie head coaches leading teams with rookie QB's and are currently poised to make the playoffs.

There is only one game this week that has zero playoff implications for both teams. Can you guess which one it is?

If you are craving excitement, an adrenaline rush, and/or a reason to stay home from church, then you have come to the right place. What a week!

  • New Orleans Saints (7-6) at Chicago Bears (7-6): NFLN, 8:15pm EST, Thursday Night - Both teams desperately need a win to stay in the playoff hunt, and there are some great matchups in this contest: Brees vs. the Bears secondary which has 19 INT's this year, and the Bears' tackling machine vs. Reggie Bush and the Saints' athletic WR corps.

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-4) at Atlanta Falcons (8-5): FOX, 1pm EST - NFC South teams are 10-0 at home vs. divisional opponents. I believe that continues here as the Bucs will be facing the league's #2 rushing offense on the heels of getting plastered by Carolina last week.

  • Washington Redskins (7-6) at Cincinnati Bengals (1-11-1): FOX, 1pm EST - This is a must-win game for the Redskins if they have a prayer playing beyond December. Their chemistry is bruised and bleeding right now which is not coming at a good time during this current swoon.

  • Detroit Lions (0-13) at Indianapolis Colts (9-4): FOX, 1pm EST - Picture a steaming hot cup of water being poured on an ice cube.

  • Seattle Seahawks (2-11) at St. Louis Rams (2-11): FOX, 1pm EST - Yep, you guessed it.

  • San Francisco 49ers (5-8) at Miami Dolphins (8-5): FOX, 1pm EST - Winning is just too much fun, and I don't see the Niners disrupting that. Miami should be juiced in front of their home fans despite the much-improved play of the Niners lately.

  • Green Bay Packers (5-8) at Jacksonville Jaguars (4-9): FOX, 1pm EST - Mathematically, the Packers are still in it, but that probably won't last long. Their running defense is horrible, they haven't played well on the road, and Jacksonville has nothing to lose.

  • San Diego Chargers (5-8) at Kansas City Chiefs (2-11): CBS, 1pm EST - Both teams have just been dreadful this year, but the Chargers are hanging on by a prayer which won't be needed vs. the league's worst defense.

  • Buffalo Bills (6-7) at NY Jets (8-5): CBS, 1pm EST - The Bills are in a nose dive, and the Jets are staring at a possible division title. Do the math.

  • Tennessee Titans (12-1) at Houston Texans (6-7): CBS, 1pm EST - Needless to say, Houston has been eliminated from the playoffs, but they'd love to put a dent in the Titans armor. Tennessee wants home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

  • Minnesota Vikings (8-5) at Arizona Cardinals (8-5): FOX, 4:05pm EST - Arizona has led the league this year with points scored per game at 28.6. You can attribute a majority of this to the fantastic year that Kurt Warner has had. This average should go up vs. the league's 20th-ranked secondary.

  • Denver Broncos (8-5) at Carolina Panthers (10-3): CBS, 4:15pm EST - Denver has won 4 out of 5 games and is 3-0 vs. NFC South opponents this season. But, they are extra thin at RB, and haven't learned to stop one yet on defense.

  • Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3) at Baltimore Ravens (9-4): CBS, 4:15pm EST - Both teams have ironclad defenses and effective offenses. Also, they simply hate each other and shouldn't have a problem assembling a fantastic battle. Pittsburgh wins the division with a win.

  • New England Patriots (8-5) at Oakland Raiders (3-10): CBS, 4:15pm EST - There is a cloud of uncertainty at the time of this article over who will be the Patriots QB. Matt Cassel's father died this week, and if he can't go Sunday then it will be rookie Kevin O'Connell will get the nod vs. this horrendous Raiders team.

  • NY Giants (11-2) at Dallas Cowboys (8-5): NBC, 8:15pm EST - Due to the crushing loss last week vs. Pitt and the fact that this is the second-to-last home game in Texas Stadium, I expect that India will be able to hear the crowd Sunday night. The Cowboys are in need of more self-discipline and heart, but I expect that they'll find what it takes to shock the world champions.

  • Cleveland Browns (4-9) at Philadelphia Eagles (7-5-1): ESPN, 8:30pm EST, MNF - Romeo Crennel will probably be someone's defensive coordinator next season.

NFL 2008 Week 14 Picks

Observations from Week 13:

  1. Only five games were won by the home team.
  2. Plaxico Burress' suspension is going to be very beneficial to the Giants which is not good news for the rest of the league.
  3. Buccaneers DC Monte Kiffin looks to be headed to the University of Tennessee to be the DC under his son, Lane Kiffin. Tampa's defensive players view Kiffin as a father figure and will use this imminent departure as motivation to give him a ring before he goes. This year's Super Bowl is in Tampa.
  4. I will be shocked if Romeo Crennel is coach of Cleveland next season.
  5. I do believe that William Clay Ford will hire a GM which will also mean the end of the line for Rod Marinelli.
  6. Is it really that surprising that Miami is exceeding expectations given that Bill Parcells is the architect?
  7. The 2010 season just might include a 17 or 18-game schedule, the end of the Thanksgiving tradition including Dallas and Detroit, and playing the Pro Bowl the week before the Super Bowl.

Speaking of the Big Game, let's take a look at this week's games and see who might step forward and add some drama to the scintillating playoff race.

  • Oakland Raiders (3-9) at San Diego Chargers (4-8): NFLN, 8:15pm EST, Thursday Night - Ten straight wins vs. Oakland and playing at home gives the Chargers the advantage in, what could be, a high-scoring affair.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars (4-8) at Chicago Bears (6-6): CBS, 1pm EST - The Jags have really turned into a bad football team, and things don't get much easier as they travel to Soldier Field to take on a Bears team that desperately needs a win to keep pace with Minnesota who plays Detroit.
  • Houston Texans (5-7) at Green Bay Packers (5-7): CBS, 1pm EST -Something tells me that the frigid conditions aren't going to be very hospitable to a Texans team who is playing in Lambeau for its first time.
  • Cleveland Browns (4-8) at Tennessee Titans (11-1): CBS, 1pm EST - Seriously...
  • Cincinnati Bengals (1-10-1) at Indianapolis Colts (8-4): CBS, 1pm EST - The Colts have won five straight...this season and over the Bengals.
  • Minnesota Vikings (7-5) at Detroit Lions (0-12): FOX, 1pm EST - QB Daunte Culpepper faces his old team, but RB Adrian Peterson is facing the league's 32nd-ranked run defense. The reunion will be ugly.
  • Atlanta Falcons (8-4) at New Orleans Saints (6-6): FOX, 1pm EST - The Saints' playoff hopes are on the line as they welcome Matt Ryan and Co. who are winless on the road vs. divisional opponents. New Orleans has only lost one home game this season.
  • Philadelphia Eagles (6-5-1) at NY Giants (11-1): FOX, 1pm EST - You wouldn't think the Giants would need motivation, but a win vs. Philly gives them the NFC East title. They'd also like to prove to the NFL that they aren't distracted by Plaxico Burress' lunacy which almost neutered him.
  • Kansas City Chiefs (2-10) at Denver Broncos (7-5): CBS, 4:05pm EST - I'm guessing that a 31st-ranked run defense on the road facing a Broncos team that has a penchant for RB success is not a good matchup. All it will do is set up the passing attack by Jay Cutler who is having a career year.
  • Miami Dolphins (7-5) at Buffalo Bills (6-6): CBS, 4:05pm EST - History will be made as the NFL plays its first regular season game in Canada. Look for Buffalo to roam this nearby countryside in complete bewilderment as they face a hot Miami team.
  • NY Jets (8-4) at San Francisco 49ers (4-8): CBS, 4:05pm EST - The Jets have won four straight on the road, and Brett Favre is 7-0 vs. the Niners.
  • New England Patriots (7-5) at Seattle Seahawks (2-10): CBS, 4:05pm EST - New England has won 13 straight vs. the NFC.
  • St. Louis Rams (2-10) at Arizona Cardinals (7-5): FOX, 4:15pm EST - I can't think of a better way for Arizona to break out of their two-game losing slump than for Kurt Warner to face his old team at home.
  • Dallas Cowboys (8-4) at Pittsburgh Steelers (9-3): FOX, 4:15pm EST - It's going to be overcast, snowy, and lip-sticking cold as Dallas' very talented offense faces the league's #1 rushing, passing, and overall defense. Add in the Steelers crowd registering on the Richter scale and you have a recipe for one exciting game.
  • Washington Redskins (7-5) at Baltimore Ravens (8-4): NBC, 8:15pm EST - These teams have met three times with the Ravens winning two of them, but all three have each been decided by a TD or less. Each team has a stifling defense and offensive campaigns that don't turn the ball over a lot.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-3) at Carolina Panthers (9-3): ESPN, 8:30pm EST, MNF - This Tampa defense is young, fast, and sprinkled with just enough veteran leadership to make it a lethal force vs. this Carolina offense.

NFL 2008 Week 13 Picks

Thoughts and observations from Week 12:

- Donovan McNabb is currently not a Hall-of-Fame caliber QB, and needs a change of scenery.

- All four NFC East teams' defenses are among the top-10 in the league.

- Denver is the worst division leader in the NFL right now, and has to have the lowest morale after getting blasted by Oakland at home.

- The Jets and Colts are poised to be very serious contenders to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. Who would love to see Favre and Manning in the AFC Championship game?

- The elements are there for an all-New York or Manning-reunion Super Bowl.

- It's still early, but it's very likely that a 10-6 team in the NFC will not make the playoffs.

- Brett Favre's pilgrimage since March 4th has been staggering and unique...much like his career.

And with that, let's take a look at the Thanksgiving games and the rest of the Week 13 match-ups:

  • Tennessee Titans (10-1) at Detroit Lions (0-11): CBS, 12:30pm EST, Thanksgiving Day - Moving right along...
  • Seattle Seahawks (2-9) at Dallas Cowboys (7-4): NBC, 4:15pm EST, Thanksgiving Day - Seattle's last two Thanksgiving visits to Texas Stadium has resulted in a combined score of 82-21.
  • Arizona Cardinals (7-4) at Philadelphia Eagles (5-5-1): NFLN, 8:15pm EST, Thanksgiving Day - The Cardinals have won more games vs. Philadelphia than any other team they've faced in their franchise's history.
  • San Francisco 49ers (3-8) at Buffalo Bills (6-5): FOX, 1pm EST - After shredding KC's defense for 54 points last week in KC, my bet's on the Bills taking care of business at home vs. another weak defense who got sliced up vs. Dallas on the road.
  • Carolina Panthers (8-3) at Green Bay Packers (5-6): FOX, 1pm EST - If there were ever a game that Packers QB Aaron Rodgers needed to play like his life depended on it, it would be this one as the Pack must win to stay close to Chicago and Minnesota. I have a feeling that the Lambeau mystique might stop by and say hello.
  • New Orleans Saints (6-5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-3): FOX, 1pm EST - Saints QB Drew Brees is having a career year, but this Tampa secondary is ranked #2 in the league, and the Bucs have yet to lose a game at home.
  • NY Giants (10-1) at Washington Redskins (7-4): FOX, 1pm EST - If the Skins want to disrupt the defending champs' current surge, they will need to open up the offense, control the clock, and avoid turnovers.
  • Baltimore Ravens (7-4) at Cincinnati Bengals (1-9-1): CBS, 1pm EST - WR Chad Johnson will be back with the team after being suspended by the Ravens for detrimental conduct. His return, though, is like sending in a check for $1000 to help with the national debt.
  • Indianapolis Colts (7-4) at Cleveland Browns (4-7): CBS, 1pm EST - Indy is 4-2 on the road this season, and they travel to the Dawg Pound to take on a Browns team whose only home win this season is against the defending Super Bowl champions. QB Brady Quinn is out for the year.
  • Miami Dolphins (6-5) at St. Louis Rams (2-9): CBS, 1pm EST - The first two picks in the 2008 NFL Draft square off against each other as Dolphins T Jake Long will face Rams DE Chris Long.
  • Atlanta Falcons (7-4) at San Diego Chargers (4-7): FOX, 4:05pm EST - Former Chargers RB Michael Turner who was L.T.'s backup returns to southern California to face his former team and protege'.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers (8-3) at New England Patriots (7-4): CBS, 4:15pm EST - The Steelers are 7-1 in the AFC while the Pats are 5-4. New England spanked Miami last week by running up 48 points on that 20th ranked defense. Pittsburgh is #1.
  • Denver Broncos (6-5) at NY Jets (8-3): CBS, 4:15pm EST - The last time Brett Favre faced Denver was in Week 7 last season. He torched that Broncos secondary in OT with an 82-yard TD pass. Things aren't much different as the Broncos secondary is ranked 25th.
  • Kansas City Chiefs (1-10) at Oakland Raiders (3-8): CBS, 4:15pm EST - The room is spinning -- I need to lie down.
  • Chicago Bears (6-5) at Minnesota Vikings (6-5): NBC, 8:15pm EST - RB Adrian Peterson has chewed up a bunch of yards vs. Chicago and I expect he'll have the same success at home on the national stage.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars (4-7) at Houston Texans (4-7): ESPN, 8:30pm EST, MNF - CSI: Miami starts at halftime.

NFL 2008 Week 12 Picks

Thoughts from Week 11...

- Pittsburgh beat San Diego 11-10 in a very tough, cold, and ugly battle. It was the first time in NFL history that a game ended with this score.

- Tons of media pundits kept hammering the fact that Tony Romo returning wasn't going to make Dallas that much better. Let's ask Washington now what they think.

- The Tennessee "Run-down-your-throat" Titans have passed for 519 yards and 5 TD's in their last two games. Who knew they had it in them?

- Just in case no one has noticed...Carolina is 8-2. These sly Panthers have silently compiled the 2nd-best record in the NFC.

- Eagles QB Donovan McNabb said that he didn't know that NFL games ended in a tie after one OT period. That's kind of like an Olympic athlete saying that he didn't realize there's a medal for third place.

- Brett Favre and the Jets are 7-3. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are 5-5. I wonder if the Packers brass is having a "Wanna get away?" moment.

- If Indianapolis makes the playoffs, look out.

- I think it was a great move by Cleveland to begin the Brady Quinn-era when they did. This gives him plenty of time to grow and get polished since this year is a wash considering Pittsburgh seemingly has the AFC North wrapped up.

- I'm so glad to see Mike Singletary get that first win under his belt. The rest of the season is a very tough stretch of games for the Niners.

- The only team that I believe has their division wrapped up is Arizona.

- There are six weeks left in the season. It's time to get serious.

  • Cincinnati Bengals (1-8-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (7-3): NFLN, 8:15pm EST, Thursday Night - Check out The Office.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-3) at Detroit Lions (0-10): FOX, 1pm EST - Isn't it interesting that no one has hired Matt Millen?
  • Chicago Bears (5-5) at St. Louis Rams (2-8): FOX, 1pm EST - This dreadful Rams defense appears to be the perfect remedy for Chicago who is battered and bruised after last week's annihilation by Green Bay.
  • Minnesota Vikings (5-5) at Jacksonville Jaguars (4-6): FOX, 1pm EST - Jags RB Maurice Jones-Drew has scored six TD's in the last three games. He faces the league's #2 rushing defense, but the Vikes are 1-4 on the road.
  • Philadelphia Eagles (5-4-1) at Baltimore Ravens (6-4): FOX, 1pm EST - Well, it's official: Philly's offense scares no one. Their rushing attack is weak which means that McNabb must air it out constantly...pretty easy to figure out. The McNabb era just might be over after this season.
  • San Francisco 49ers (3-7) at Dallas Cowboys (6-4): FOX, 1pm EST - As the Texas Stadium era winds down, each home game will be a live hornet's nest.
  • NY Jets (7-3) at Tennessee Titans (10-0): CBS, 1pm EST - I love this match-up. Two grizzled veterans having really good years leading their divisions. Favre will have to have a perfect game on the road facing a defense that is #1 in turnover ratio and loves to pressure the QB into quick decisions. It won't surprise me to see Brett Favre and Co. beat the Titans, but Tennessee should stay strong at home.
  • Buffalo Bills (5-5) at Kansas City Chiefs (1-9): CBS, 1pm EST - Buffalo is in a tail spin having lost 4 in a row, and KC has already crashed losing their last 6 games. Something has to give this Sunday, and I'm guessing it will be Larry Johnson and Co. at home.
  • New England Patriots (6-4) at Miami Dolphins (6-4): CBS, 1pm EST - These two teams are very evenly matched statistically and are tied for second in the AFC East. Miami is hot right now, and a win could mean a share of first if the Titans beat NY.
  • Houston Texans (3-7) at Cleveland Browns (4-6): CBS, 1pm EST - While the Brady Quinn era is getting revved up, the Browns defense is hurting and soft. Houston hasn't won on the road this season, but their offense is #5 in the league and is primed for the upset.
  • Oakland Raiders (2-8) at Denver Broncos (6-4): CBS, 4:05pm EST - There is not one positive thing to say about the Raiders who have scored two offensive TD's in the last six games. Both defenses are horrendous, but Denver's offense is solid despite their RB woes.
  • Washington Redskins (6-4) at Seattle Seahawks (6-4): FOX, 4:15pm EST - Last season's early exit from the playoffs at the hands of the 'Hawks plus last week's heart crushing loss to Dallas at home is motivation enough.
  • NY Giants (9-1) at Arizona Cardinals (7-3): FOX, 4:15pm EST - The last time the Giants stepped onto Univ. of Phoenix Stadium, they beat the undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. This will be a great battle, but NY simply is like a Sherman tank right now.
  • Carolina Panthers (8-2) at Atlanta Falcons (6-4): FOX, 4:15pm EST - Both offenses are fueled by their running game and have very effective, and sometimes lethal, passing attacks. Carolina's defense is more stringent, but Atlanta is 4-1 at home.
  • Indianapolis Colts (6-4) at San Diego Chargers (4-6): NBC, 8:15pm EST - This contest in southern California will be quite entertaining to watch. Indy is hot and remembers their playoff exit in January at the hands of these Chargers.
  • Green Bay Packers (5-5) at New Orleans Saints (5-5): ESPN, 8:30pm EST, MNF - Both teams are fighting for their playoff lives. Green Bay's intimidating secondary vs. Drew Brees will be a key battle to watch. The Packers lead the league with 7 defensive TD's.

NFL 2008 Week 11 picks

There's nothing quite as disheartening as a team that just can't find any success on the football field while being led by an inept quarterback. You can have very lethal receivers and bone-crushing running backs, but it takes an operative quarterback to get them the ball.

When your field general is out-of-rhythm, careless, and color blind, it breeds humiliation and skepticism in the hearts and minds of the fan. When you see them under center or going back for a pass, you'd rather take a burning candle and write your name with hot wax on your stomach.

But it's all worth it the moment your realize that those days are over. When that new face emerges from the dusty horizon, hope spring eternal. You don't care how he looks, what number he's wearing, or who he worships. The aura of the team is transformed at least for that moment when he makes that walk from the sideline to the huddle for the very first time. He may be someone that was already tagged with high expectations or an inexperienced veteran that simply has been waiting his turn.

And then, words can't describe what happens when this heir-apparent immediately shows signs of becoming the antithesis of the former regime. Watching him exude confidence, poise, and leadership triggers a swell of relief and trust throughout the land.

The 2008 season has witnessed some franchises relishing in some unexpected success so far this year. Most of this fortune can be attributed to the eye-opening performance of their new leader behind center.

In Baltimore, rookie Joe Flacco was thrown into the starting role before the season began mostly due to injuries and some indecision. While his stats don't reveal it, Flacco has displayed the leadership and poise that the Ravens (6-3) has been seeking. First-round pick Matt Ryan is tearing it up in his rookie season in Atlanta, and his stats this season are eerily similar to those of Eli Manning. His accuracy and aptitude are as strong as a veteran QB as the Falcons are basking in a 6-3 record as well.

The Cleveland Browns got a huge boost of confidence last week vs. Denver when 2nd-year QB Brady Quinn started his first NFL game in front of his hometown fans in relief of the inconsistent Derek Anderson. While the Browns lost the game, you couldn't help but notice that Cleveland entered a new era with Quinn at the helm. He was 23 of 35 for 239 yards and two TD's. He did not turn the ball over and came very close to winning that game.

But, there is a man who is a rookie to the city of New York this year that has caused mass hysteria that would rival what is going on in Cleveland, Baltimore, and Atlanta. The grizzled legend, Brett Favre, has brought Jets fans to their knees with their eyes fixed to the heavens in gratitude. While his maverick-style of play does produce critical turnovers at times, you don't get the feeling that Jets fans want Chad Pennington or Brooks Bollinger back in the Meadowlands. His leadership, savvy, and enthusiasm has encompassed this team and they are now looking at a 6-3 record and tied for first in their division with the Patriots.

This battle kicks off a week of NFL games that are quite critical for some franchises if they want to have any hopes of playing in January.

  • NY Jets (6-3) at New England Patriots (6-3): NFLN, 8:15pm EST, Thursday Night - There's nothing like a battle on national TV between division opponents who simply can't stand each other. If only Brady were healthy...
  • Denver Broncos (5-4) at Atlanta Falcons (6-3): CBS, 1pm EST - How bad is Denver's defense? Only Detroit, KC, and St. Louis are worse. Atlanta's 6th ranked offense (2nd rushing) should have a field day at home where they are 4-0 this season.
  • Houston Texans (3-6) at Indianapolis Colts (5-4): CBS, 1pm EST - It's very difficult seeing an upset at Lucas Oil Stadium this week. Indy is coming off a huge win in Pittsburgh, has Bob Sanders back on defense, and they flat out own the Texans winning 12 of 13 games.
  • Oakland Raiders (2-7) at Miami Dolphins (5-4): CBS, 1pm EST - The Dolphins are starting to get the hang of this reality called winning while the Raiders view winning as simply a phenomenon.
  • Baltimore Ravens (6-3) at NY Giants (8-1): CBS, 1pm EST - If you like hard-hitting football, you've come to the right place. NY has the top rated running attack while the Ravens are #1 in stopping the run. The Giants have never beaten Baltimore, and they know that.
  • Philadelphia Eagles (5-4) at Cincinnati Bengals (1-8): FOX, 1pm EST - Teams who can't get to the quarterback typically don't do well. Through nine games, the Bengals have sacked the QB nine times. Philly has 28.
  • Chicago Bears (5-4) at Green Bay Packers (4-5): FOX, 1pm EST - These two teams have met more times than any two teams in NFL history. This classic rivalry has always been a joy to watch. It's going to be cold and possible snow. Now, this is football!
  • New Orleans Saints (4-5) at Kansas City Chiefs (1-8): FOX, 1pm EST - Despite the records, I expect a high-scoring and close contest in Arrowhead Stadium. The Saints defense on the road has been horrible, but Drew Brees has had huge games vs. the Chiefs.
  • Minnesota Vikings (5-4) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-3): FOX, 1pm EST - Two excellent defenses square off in south Florida as Tampa will have their hands full with RB Adrian Peterson and Minnesota will need to put intense pressure on Jeff Garcia. The Vikings have not been good on the road while Tampa is undefeated at home.
  • Detroit Lions (0-9) at Carolina Panthers (7-2): FOX, 1pm EST - Has everyone tried Facebook?
  • St. Louis Rams (2-7) at San Francisco 49ers (2-7): FOX, 4:05pm EST - Mike Singletary will be an NFL head coach somewhere next year.
  • Arizona Cardinals (6-3) at Seattle Seahawks (2-7): FOX, 4:05pm EST - Matt Hasselbeck returns to lead the Seahawks offense, but he can't play defense.
  • San Diego Chargers (4-5) at Pittsburgh Steelers (6-3): CBS, 4:15pm EST - San Diego has never won in Pittsburgh, almost lost to KC last week despite changing defensive coordinators, and the Steelers are not happy having lost two straight home games.
  • Tennessee Titans (9-0) at Jacksonville Jaguars (4-5): CBS, 4:15pm EST - I believe that the elements are here in J-town for an upset, and I don't believe that the Titans will go undefeated. I just don't see it happening this week.
  • Dallas Cowboys (5-4) at Washington Redskins (6-3): NBC, 8:15pm EST, Sunday Night - The Cowboys will have a new look in the nation's capitol with many players returning from a long hiatus due to injuries including QB Tony Romo and CB Terence Newman. Dallas must pressure Jason Campbell relentlessly much like Pittsburgh did last week. RB Clinton Portis is doubtful to play.
  • Cleveland Browns (3-6) at Buffalo Bills (5-4): ESPN, 8:30pm EST, MNF - I know it's early, but you might as well start your Christmas shopping.

NFL 2008 Week 10 picks

On the heels of an historic Presidential election, let's take a look at the division races and see who the candidates might be for this season's playoff field.

The AFC East is the tightest division in the league. With Brett Favre's arrival, Tom Brady's departure, and the surprising upsurge of Buffalo and Miami, the balance of power is no longer encompassing Gillette Stadium. Considering the firepower in the other divisions, I doubt this division produces a wild card team.

In the AFC North, there are two races going on: one is for the division crown between Pittsburgh and Baltimore while Cleveland and Cincinnati duke it out for the cellar position. The Steelers and Ravens both possess bruising defenses and like to run it down your throat, but Pitt has 5 of the next 8 games at home while their road record is 4-1.

In the AFC South, Tennessee appears to be in control with a four-game lead over Indy and five games over Jacksonville and Houston. I think it's safe to say that they'll be playing in January if they can stay healthy.

The AFC West is the weakest division in the league with Denver leading the way at 4-4. San Diego's defense is porous thanks to a horrendous secondary at is now at 3-5. Oakland and Kansas City are probably the two worst franchises in the league when it comes to talent level, chemistry, and motivation.

When the last place team is the 5-4 Dallas Cowboys, I'd say that that division is pretty strong. The NFC East is led by the defending champion Giants while Washington and Philly are right on their tails. The chances of both wild card teams coming from this division are excellent.

In the NFC North, the Windy City has seen a winning attitude blow into Soldier Field thanks to a productive running attack and sound play at QB. Their defense isn't bad either as they sit at 5-3. Green Bay and Minnesota are 4-4 and very much a threat to take over this division too. Detroit needs to play like their life depended on it in order to reach .500.

The NFC South is also quite strong with Carolina (6-2) and Tampa Bay (6-3) headlining the show. Atlanta is 5-3 and in a perfect place to strike a death blow with five of their next eight at home including the next three in a row. Most of their opponents are very feeble vs. the run, and the Falcons are #1 in rushing. And don't count out New Orleans at 4-4.

If you would have told me when the season began that Arizona would be leading the NFC West by three games at 5-3 at the Week 10 mark, I would have recommended that you have a CAT scan. The Cardinals, especially Kurt Warner, are looking very good right now while Seattle, San Francisco, and St. Louis are on life support at 2-6.

There are some match-ups in Week 10 that could provide a nice twist to this division landscape. Let's take a look.

  • Denver Broncos (4-4) at Cleveland Browns (3-5): NFL Network, 8:15pm, Thursday Night - Huge night for Brady Quinn. The 2nd-year QB gets his first NFL start vs. a bitter rival on the national stage in front of his hometown fans.
  • New Orleans Saints (4-4) at Atlanta Falcons (5-3): FOX, 1pm EST - The Saints are 0-3 on the road while the Falcons are undefeated at home. QB Matt Ryan and RB Michael Turner should have a big day.
  • Seattle Seahawks (2-6) at Miami Dolphins (4-4): FOX, 1pm EST - QB Chad Pennington is probably having the best season of his career. Miami is clicking right now on both sides of the ball...Seattle isn't.
  • Green Bay Packers (4-4) at Minnesota Vikings (4-4): FOX, 1pm EST - Excellent showdown between two quality RB's in Ryan Grant and Adrian Peterson. The Vikings are #2 in stopping the run, and the crowd should be charged vs. a division rival.
  • St. Louis Rams (2-6) at NY Jets (5-3): FOX, 1pm EST - The table has been set for a NY ripping. The Rams' defense is just awful while the Jets' 4th-ranked run defense shouldn't have a problem stopping the Rams who might be without Steven Jackson.
  • Tennessee Titans (8-0) at Chicago Bears (5-3): CBS, 1pm EST - Both coaches are doing fantastic jobs this year. They each lack a superstar QB, possess a nice running attack, and are anchored by stringent defenses. You may not see any TD's in this one.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars (3-5) at Detroit Lions (0-8): CBS, 1pm EST - Daunte Culpepper is more than likely getting the start vs. a Jags team that is pretty bitter after losing to a former winless team in Cincy last week.
  • Buffalo Bills (5-3) at New England Patriots (5-3): CBS, 1pm EST - Statistically, these two teams are pretty even on both sides of the ball. Buffalo has yet to win a game vs. a division opponent and that will be hard to change vs. the Pats at home.
  • Baltimore Ravens (5-3) at Houston Texans (3-5): CBS, 1pm EST - This will actually be a fun game to watch. Sage Rosenfels gets the nod at QB for Houston and he's solid. The Ravens' defense, running game, and QB play from rookie Joe Flacco is very effective right now.
  • Carolina Panthers (6-2) at Oakland Raiders (2-6): FOX, 4:05pm EST - Last week, Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell was 6 of 19 for 31 yards and an interception vs. Atlanta. Yes, 31 yards...Bart Starr could suit up today and throw for 31 yards.
  • Indianapolis Colts (4-4) at Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2): CBS, 4:15pm EST - The last time these two teams met, the Colts K Mike Vanderjagt missed a 46-yard field goal in the closing seconds in the AFC Championship Game in 2005. Pittsburgh has won 14 of the last 16 meetings. A sub-par Peyton Manning and limp Colts offense vs. this suffocating Steelers defense is a disaster waiting to happen.
  • Kansas City Chiefs (1-7) at San Diego Chargers (3-5): CBS, 4:15pm EST - Trust me, Facebook is much more entertaining.
  • NY Giants (7-1) at Philadelphia Eagles (5-3): NBC, 8:15pm EST, Sunday Night - Nothing like a good old-fashioned NFC battle to cap off the day. Both teams are dangerous on both sides of the ball. NY has won five of the past six encounters.
  • San Francisco 49ers (2-6) at Arizona Cardinals (5-3): ESPN, 8:30pm EST, MNF - During halftime of the October 26th contest vs. Seattle, interim coach Mike Singletary dropped his pants in front of his players to prove the point that they were getting their tails whipped. Expect more exposure in the desert against Kurt Warner.

Locker room or kitchen?

I've noticed through the years that a reporter's intellect level is sometimes reflected in the kind of questions that are posed in interviews, both formal and in the locker room.

I don't have a lot of respect for those who fire off duds like, "What is your goal going into this game?"... Have you considered firing your defensive coordinator? ... "You are now a Super Bowl champion, is this the highlight of your season?"

I am not a sexist, but you can't help but notice that several of these reporters who fall in this "no-clue" category are female. It's kind of like men teaching Lamaze classes.

Perfect example below. I read this on SI.com.

Fox is weighing whether to assign reporter Danyelle Sargent to more NFL games after an embarrassing mistake last week. During a taped interview with new 49ers coach Mike Singletary, Sargent said, ``I hear your mentor Bill Walsh was one of the first phone calls you made when you found out you had the job.''

Don't you know Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Paul Brown, and...Bill Walsh all just looked at each other and groaned in their grave when those words were uttered.

NFL 2008 Week 9 Picks

Mark Twain once said, "Climate is what we expect. Weather is what we get."

The 2008 NFL season is at the midway point, and it has been anything but calculable. It has lived up to the reputation of this league by swatting at off-season expectations like pesky flies at a Sunday picnic.

There are teams like Indianapolis, Seattle, and San Diego who are used to surveying the scene from a much higher mountain top than the mesa where they currently reside. What about those squads who entered the season with very low expectations? Buffalo, Washington, Atlanta, and Baltimore have posted winning records when many expected them to be smelling a little ripe right about now.

And, you can't ignore the very impressive displays of dominance and efficiency by Tennessee, NY Giants, Pittsburgh, Carolina, and even New England in the wake of Tom Brady being MIA.

Here are some notes of recognition that I think are worth pointing out at the half-way mark:

1. MVP - Clinton Portis. He has 944 yards averaging 5 yards per carry plus 7 TD's to help lead Washington to a very impressive 6-2 record. Honorable mention: Kurt Warner. Drew Brees is having a phenomenal year, but Warner's numbers are also excellent as Arizona is in first place in the soft NFC West.

2. Rookie of the Year - Chris Johnson. He leads Tennessee with 626 yards rushing while averaging 5.1 yards per carry plus 4 TD's and has given coach Jeff Fisher an excellent tandem along with LenDale White to strike fear in opposing defenses. Honorable mention: Matt Ryan. Atlanta...yes, Atlanta...is 4-3 and a legitimate playoff dark horse team.

3. Coach of the Year - Jeff Fisher. To lead a team to a 7-0 record with a fossil QB, sub-par WR's, and a youthful running attack takes a special head coach, and you couldn't ask for a better one in Fisher. Of course, an ironclad defense helps too. Honorable mention: Jim Zorn. This man had never been a head coach or even called plays. This hire is now looking like a genius move by Daniel Snyder.

4. If the Super Bowl were played today... - NY Giants vs. Tennessee Titans. Two punishing and explosive defenses. Two lethal running attacks. Two emotional coaches. One earth-shaking battle.

Here is how the second half of the season is kicking off...trust me, you'll want to cancel your Sunday plans:

  • NY Jets (4-3) at Buffalo Bills (5-2): CBS, 1pm EST -This is a critical AFC East battle. The Bills are undefeated at home and have displayed a well-balanced team this season. Brett Favre must protect the ball and get good field position from the Jets defense that ranks third in sacks and fourth in stopping the run.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars (3-4) at Cincinnati Bengals (0-8): CBS, 1pm EST - Brush up on the candidates' platforms.
  • Baltimore Ravens (4-3) at Cleveland Browns (3-4): CBS, 1pm EST - Both offenses are scraping the bottom of the barrel, but QB Joe Flacco and Co. have stomped their last two foes, Miami and Oakland. The Ravens defense is making waves wherever it goes this season.
  • Houston Texans (3-4) at Minnesota Vikings (3-4): CBS, 1pm EST - There hasn't been a problem in Houston as the Texans offense has been hot the last few games giving the Texans three straight wins. Minnesota's defense and Adrian Peterson will be enough to bring them back to earth.
  • Detroit Lions (0-7) at Chicago Bears (4-3): FOX, 1pm EST - Stop and think of any possible way to lose an NFL game, and Detroit has probably done it. Why stop now?
  • Green Bay Packers (4-3) at Tennessee Titans (7-0): FOX, 1pm EST - I love this match-up. Both teams have excellent secondaries so look for the Pack and the Titans to get their running game going. That's good news for Tennessee as the Pack is 25th in stopping the run. Green Bay is rested and just might put up a good fight, but that Tennessee defense and running attack should prevail once again.
  • Arizona Cardinals (4-3) at St. Louis Rams (2-5): FOX, 1pm EST - Motivation has a way of trumping all the stats and rankings. Kurt Warner always seems to have an extra potion of hunger when he comes back to St. Louis.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-3) at Kansas City Chiefs (1-6): FOX, 1pm EST - Last season after losing 6 straight games, Coach Herm Edwards said, “People aren’t used to this in Kansas City. Get over it. It happens. It’s called life. You can’t think you’re too big that it’s not going to happen to you. It happens to everybody." If you follow that chain of logic, so does unemployment.
  • Miami Dolphins (3-4) at Denver Broncos (4-3): CBS, 4:05pm EST - It's been very difficult for Denver to stop the pass this season, but it's been even more of a challenge to stop the run. A ruptured defense can be like walking around with a cement block tied to your leg. You can move forward but no one can tell. Miami's offense is ranked higher than Jacksonville and New England -- Denver's last two losses.
  • Atlanta Falcons (4-3) at Oakland Raiders (2-5): FOX, 4:15pm EST - It's not often that beating a 4-3 team at home is considered a huge upset, but this is what the Raiders are facing. They are very hobbled at RB, QB JaMarcus Russell continues to disappoint, and the defense is shameful. Atlanta QB Matt Ryan is blossoming well, WR Roddy White is white hot, and Michael Turner is lethal at RB.
  • Dallas Cowboys (5-3) at NY Giants (6-1): FOX, 4:15pm EST - Last season's divisional playoff loss at home was crushing for Dallas and is seared into their memories. But, they are simply too banged up and off-balance to seek revenge this time vs. a Giants team that appears to be impenetrable. This contest may need an "R" rating for gore and disturbing images.
  • Philadelphia Eagles (4-3) at Seattle Seahawks (2-5): FOX, 4:15pm EST - This season isn't exactly the warm farewell tour that coach Mike Holmgren pictured this past off-season. Philadelphia poses a huge problem for a dormant Seahawks team which is 31st in offense and 27th in defense.
  • New England Patriots (5-2) at Indianapolis Colts (3-4): NBC, 8:15pm EST, Sunday Night - QB Matt Cassel is putting up Brady-like numbers in his first seven games as an NFL starting QB. But, their defense hasn't been as effective as years past, and that just might come into play on the road against a Colts team that needs to rebound offensively. Indy's defense isn't doing well either, but they are 2nd in pass defense and will probably give Cassel fits especially with S Bob Sanders back in the fold.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2) at Washington Redskins (6-2): ESPN, 8:30pm EST, MNF - Pittsburgh has beaten Houston, Cleveland, Baltimore, Jacksonville, and Cincy while losing to the Giants and Philly. They have a great defense and solid running game, but this will be a true measure of how good they are so far this season. Washington has beaten New Orleans, Arizona, Dallas, Philly, and Cleveland. Their losses have come against the Giants and Rams. FedEx Field will be registering on the Richter scale.

NFL 2008 Week 8 picks

As we approach the half way point of the 2008 NFL season, I'm becoming aware of an awkward and somewhat humorous element that has crept into the legion of NFL fans: Hormonal emotions.

Frustration and disappointment over a team's plight are not alien manifestations as football fans on each end of the fanatic spectrum have expressed themselves in pure unadulterated honesty before.

But, this recent trend of hysterical and temperamental sentiments is overreaction to the core, and it can define the intelligence level of the fan base.

What makes this outburst so bizarre is also the timing. Why are some fans writing off the season in Week 7?

This can't be any more evident than in Dallas. The media and fans raised the expectations for the Cowboys to Everest heights. The Cowboys themselves didn't. There was talk of 16-0, 14-2, winning the Super Bowl, etc. Dallas now sets at 4-3 after hitting a rough stretch of games where they've lost 3 of 4 due to injuries to some key players, a lack of emotion, and a befuddled defense. All of these factors can also affect how you develop and execute game plans. The next thing you hear is an outpouring of fans demanding that Wade Phillips be fired and a shallow prediction that Dallas has just missed the playoffs, they should just start over and rebuild, etc.

Are you kidding me? Of course, these are the same fans that raise the roof at Texas Stadium and do The Wave when Dallas is five yards from the end zone WITH THE BALL thus jeopardizing the offense from hearing the signals.

I can understand these helpless feelings coming from fans in Detroit, Oakland, and Cincinnati whose teams are in disarray from top to bottom. Drastic actions in those type of cities can sometimes be justified. The Lions cut out their cancerous GM, but there's still a lot of work to do. Oakland changed coaches but it doesn't matter who is patrolling the sidelines if Al Davis is owner. Cincy might need to make a change at head coach just like St. Louis did as the Rams are not the same pathetic team under Jim Haslett. San Francisco followed the same model and installed Mike Singletary as head coach, and my guess is you're going to see positive vibes come from that city too.

Sometimes, it is what it is, but it's not the end of the world. Football fans aren't better or worse people than they were before the season began.

These things have a way of working out for a lot of teams, and history is full of teams who have started very slow and rusty only to roar back and not only make the playoffs but to actually come away world champions (Yes, Giant fans, I'm referring to the Big Blue.)

The season is still early for many teams, including Dallas. So many things can still happen to jump-start a sluggish team, but at the same rate, things can get worse. That's why the NFL is so great. Events and circumstances on and off the field can strike at a moment's notice out of nowhere and alter your expectations...good or bad.

There is plenty of time for things to turn around so embrace and enjoy the remainder of the season. Just take a deep breath and leave those unwarranted emotions at the door...until the playoffs arrive.

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-2) at Dallas Cowboys (4-3): FOX, 1pm EST - There is a sound coming out of Valley Ranch, and it's not pleasant. Coaches and players alike are sick of losing and are on a mission. The home crowd and an opportunity to beat Jeff Garcia, who is a Cowboys nemesis, should be enough to kick start The Boys.
  • Washington Redskins (5-2) at Detroit Lions (0-6): FOX, 1pm EST - Crazier things have happened, but Detroit is skimming the barrel in every statistical category so an upset win over the Skins is about as remote as me buying the Desperate Housewives DVD set.
  • St. Louis Rams (2-4) at New England Patriots (4-2): FOX, 1pm EST - Both teams are second in their division which is staggering if you think about the last few seasons for each team. QB Matt Cassel appears to be getting comfortable with the Patriots offense which was evident in last week's thrashing of Denver at home.
  • Atlanta Falcons (4-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (3-3): FOX, 1pm EST - This will be the ultimate test for rookie QB Matt Ryan who has not faired too well vs. teams anchored by stout defenses although he did well vs. Chicago in his last outing two weeks ago. Both teams are coming off byes, and coach Andy Reid is 9-0 in games after bye weeks.
  • Arizona Cardinals (4-2) at Carolina Panthers (5-2): FOX, 1pm EST - Trench warfare determines this one. Both squads have dynamic defensive lines which can alter any turf war. They also each have great passing attacks, but Carolina has a better running game.
  • Buffalo Bills (5-1) at Miami Dolphins (2-4): CBS, 1pm EST - Despite the record, Miami has been a joy to watch this year on offense, but this Bills defense is serious. Something tells me that south Florida won't be sunny when the final gun sounds.
  • San Diego Chargers (3-4) vs. New Orleans Saints (3-4) in London, England: CBS, 1pm EST - This will be QB Drew Brees' first time to face the Chargers since he left them in 2006. The void left by Reggie Bush due to injury will be cavernous. Both teams cannot afford to lose if they want to keep within striking distance in their respective divisions. Wembley Stadium historically has horrible field conditions.
  • Kansas City Chiefs (1-5) at NY Jets (3-3): CBS, 1pm EST - Look for RB Thomas Jones to have a huge game vs. this very fragile KC defense which allowed over 300 yards rushing last week vs. Tennessee. This should allow Brett Favre to settle down as he needs a turnover-free game in front of his home fans.
  • Oakland Raiders (2-4) at Baltimore Ravens (3-3): CBS, 1pm EST - Not going to waste much time here. Baltimore's defense is stifling and the Raiders offense is very ineffective. The Ravens need to focus on stopping the Raiders RB's, and they should do fine.
  • Cleveland Browns (2-4) at Jacksonville Jaguars (3-3): CBS, 4:05pm EST - I might have picked Cleveland here in an upset due to their success in J-town (two straight wins), but the enigmatic TE Kellen Winslow and Cleveland management are at odds and those types of dynamics have a tendency to rattle the chemistry.
  • Cincinnati Bengals (0-7) at Houston Texans (2-4): CBS, 4:05pm EST - On paper, this one is already in the books. Cincy has never lost to Houston in their three meetings, but this isn't that Bengals team. They are very unstable at RB, and QB Carson Palmer will miss his third straight game due to elbow problems and just might be out for the year. A loss will have the fire under Marvin Lewis glowing white.
  • NY Giants (5-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (5-1): FOX, 4:15pm EST - My taste buds stung and salivated when I saw this matchup. Can you think of two more balanced and even teams playing right now? Solid running attacks. Smothering defenses who love to rush the QB. Stellar quarterbacks. WR Plaxico Burress visits Heinz Field for the first time since he left in 2004. The Terrible Towels will be thick.
  • Seattle Seahawks (1-5) at San Francisco 49ers (2-5): FOX, 4:15pm EST - New Niners head coach Mike Singletary takes over for his mentor, Mike Nolan. Singletary is a man of fiery passion, fierce competitiveness, and impeccable character. These kinds of traits have a way of creeping into the mindsets of the players. This matchup against a lousy Seahawks team should be the perfect inauguration for the Singletary era.
  • Indianapolis Colts (3-3) at Tennessee Titans (6-0): ESPN, 8:30pm EST, MNF - Whoa. Indianapolis travels to Music City to take on their division rivals who are having the time of their life right now. A rejuvenated Kerry Collins, a heart-stopping running attack, and a defense that makes offense wet themselves has this Titans team on cloud nine. Peyton Manning is having an average year and has not done well on the road this year. Indy's run defense is also coming apart at the seams. Both teams have dynamic coaches. Don't go anywhere.

NFL 2008 Week 7 Picks

Expect the unexpected.

Week 6 proved relentlessly that this should be the motto of the National Football League. This was one of those weekends that you needed Valium and nitroglycerin next to your nachos, wings, and beer. In case you're immersed in the presidential debates and forgot, let's recap:

- In eleven seconds, you can put on and tie a pair of tennis shoes, spread butter on a piece of toast, or check the oil in your car. You can also receive a kickoff, throw a a 26-yard strike, and kick a 48-yard field goal to win a game as Atlanta proved in their stunning win over Chicago 22-20.

- Houston continued its unbeaten streak vs. Miami by coming from behind and getting its first victory of the season when QB Matt Schaub scored on a 3-yard run with 3 seconds left giving Miami it's third loss.

- In a classic "Wanna get away..." moment, Lions QB Dan Orlovsky ran away from the Minnesota blitz along the back of the end zone from one end to the other...not realizing that he was out of bounds. The result was a safety, and Minnesota won 12-10 on a 26-yard field goal with nine seconds left.

- Apparently when Scott Linehan was fired from the Rams, the rest of the team disappeared with him. These were not the same Rams in Washington who actually played some offense, defense, and special teams in stunning the Redskins 19-17 on a last second 49-yard field goal.

- This was not a mirage in the Arizona desert. Dallas gave up an opening kickoff for a TD, struggled mightily on both sides of the ball all afternoon, used big plays to tie the game and send it into OT, and then got a punt blocked which led to the game-winning TD and their punter breaking his foot. Arizona won 30-24 and that wasn't the end of it as the week to follow was anything but boring.

- The roles were reversed in San Diego as the Chargers appeared to be superhuman and ran all over the Patriots who struggled on defense to stop Rivers, L.T. and Co. only to get blown out 30-10.

- On Monday Night, everyone expected the Giants to waltz into the Dawg Pound and pound the Browns into submission. The problem was that the team that NY expected to be the brunt of their blows wasn't the lowly squad that everyone had already written off. Cleveland acted like a wounded wild dog that had been cornered and ripped up the Giants 35-14.

What will Week 7 hold? Is another hapless team going to throw off their mask and reveal their true identity? The suspense, intrigue, and excitement is building so grab your remote and catheter. Oh, and don't forget the meds.

  • San Diego Chargers (3-3) at Buffalo Bills (4-1): CBS, 1pm EST - Injuries have peppered the Bills secondary as they prepare to face a Chargers offense that seemed to find itself last week vs. New England. San Diego has won 6 of the last 8 meetings and leads the overall series 20-9-2.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers (4-1) at Cincinnati Bengals (0-6): CBS, 1pm EST - Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has never lost in the state of Ohio (5-0 in Cincy and 5-0 in Cleveland.)
  • Tennessee Titans (5-0) at Kansas City Chiefs (1-4): CBS, 1pm EST - I do believe that in today's NFL, anything can happen on any given Sunday. But, I also believe that unless the Titans are captured by aliens, all signs point to a blood bath in Arrowhead.
  • Baltimore Ravens (2-3) at Miami Dolphins (2-3):CBS, 1pm EST - Two teams in the rebuilding stages square off in sunny Florida where the Ravens have never won. Their offensive line is soft, and rookie QB Joe Flacco is struggling. But, they have the top-rated defense in the league and will be facing a team that is full of surprises on offense this year.
  • Minnesota Vikings (3-3) at Chicago Bears (3-3): FOX, 1pm EST - This is probably my favorite matchup of the week. The NFC North has a special quality: Cold-weathered teams who love to churn the ball on the ground and chew up offenses with their stringent defenses. Both of these teams are running the ball well and anchored by intimidating defenses.
  • Dallas Cowboys (4-2) at St. Louis Rams (1-4): FOX, 1pm EST - First, it was an embarrassing loss to Arizona. Then, in the week that followed, Dallas found out it would be without the services of Tony Romo, Felix Jones, and Mat McBriar due to injuries of varying degrees. Then, CB Pacman Jones got suspended...again. Dallas also traded for ex-Lions WR Roy Williams to line up opposite T.O. Will they survive this rocky week? I think St. Louis is a good start...especially if Romo decides to play after a phone call from Brett Favre.
  • San Francisco 49ers (2-4) at NY Giants (4-1): FOX, 1pm EST - Philadelphia got back on track last week by unleashing its fury vs. a suspect Niners defense. The Giants got humiliated on the national stage by Cleveland. Do the math.
  • New Orleans Saints (3-3) at Carolina Panthers (4-2): FOX, 1pm EST - There isn't a hotter QB in the league right now than Drew Brees. He will have his work cut out for him facing the NFL's 2nd-ranked pass defense on the road. Both teams have balanced rushing attacks that will be colliding with effective run defenses. Panthers WR Steve Smith has 7 TD's in his last six meetings vs. the Saints.
  • Detroit Lions (0-5) at Houston Texans (1-4): FOX, 4:05pm EST - A franchise full of pride and promise vs. a squad full of plight and pestilence.
  • NY Jets (3-2) at Oakland Raiders (1-4): CBS, 4:15pm EST - If you take away stats and records, Oakland may be the worst football team in the league from the top down. The Raiders welcome the Jets led by Brett Favre who last faced the Raiders on December 22, 2003 when he shredded them for 399 yards and 4 TD's following his father's death.
  • Indianapolis Colts (3-2) at Green Bay Packers (3-3): CBS, 4:15pm EST - It was nice to see Peyton Manning back to form last week as he lit it up vs. Baltimore at home. Things will be a little different for Manning and Co. as they visit the Pack in Lambeau. The Colts offensive line is tattered right now, and that is great news for the league's 7th-ranked passing defense. Indy has won 13 straight in October.
  • Cleveland Browns (2-3) at Washington Redskins (4-2): CBS, 4:15pm EST - Things should get back to normal for both clubs as Washington remembers very clearly being embarrassed in front of their home fans last week in their loss to the Rams. Cleveland came out of nowhere at home and surprised the Giants. This time they are on the road, and the Skins aren't happy.
  • Seattle Seahawks (1-4) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-2): NBC, 8:15pm EST, Sunday Night - This isn't a good situation for Seattle. QB Matt Hasselbeck will miss his second straight game with back and knee injuries. Due to his absence and no continuity at receiver, the pressure has been on the running game and their defense who are getting worn out fast. Tampa is solid and should thrive at home.
  • Denver Broncos (4-2) at New England Patriots (3-2): ESPN, 8:30pm EST, MNF - Both of these defenses have seen better days and had more productive seasons. They each are facing offenses that are very talented, but the edge here goes to Denver who ranks 4th in total offense. They also have a great line who are facing a Pats unit that has not been able to put pressure on the QB this season.

NFL 2008 Week 6 Picks

Football is a barbaric, tenacious, and vile game. It consists of brawny gridiron soldiers executing complex, strategic game plans using methods including blinding speed, laser dexterity, and obliterating hits. On any given play, there's splintering bones, spurting blood, brain trauma, ripped muscles, and jarred teeth that end up wedged in cleats.

But every Sunday, media and football fans seem infatuated with dissecting the outcome of games based on the beauty of the wins. They are consumed by style points. They talk about how teams won, but "It was an ugly win" or "That was not a pretty victory" or "They shouldn't have won that game...they looked out of sync," and then there's "If I was the coach, I wouldn't be pleased with how they won that one."

Are you kidding me?

Anyone who thinks that NFL teams begins the regular season like an ironed, crisp dress shirt just returned from the cleaners, isn't living in reality. Anyone who thinks that NFL teams should be at their ultimate best in every area of the game by Week 5 is seeing a mirage.

The pre-season is four games that allow coaches to determine their roster and work on fundamentals. It's basically glorified training camp on TV that prepares the teams for the regular season which is the training ground for the playoffs.

The regular season is where the concentration and attitude of all 1,696 players becomes monumental as all 32 teams try to find their stride and momentum at just the right time while jockeying for position in their divisions. But, there will still be crushing injuries, mishaps, poorly executed plays, mental breakdowns, and bad timing.

Most teams don't reach their true potential and the pinnacle of their momentum until the last month of the season.

So, in the meantime, look at these early weeks of warfare as teams still discovering who they are and what they're made of. It's a process and journey which doesn't deserve false expectations of these players and teams.

What will happen in this leg of the journey in Week 6? Which teams will finally slip in place and get our attention? Are there any teams that have unknowingly already reached their pinnacle for this season and will begin to fade to black?

Remember. This games will continue to be gut-wrenching, explosive, mind-blowing, and extremely entertaining. But, it's only Week 6.

  • Chicago Bears (3-2) at Atlanta Falcons (3-2): FOX, 1pm EST - Two of the most eye-opening RB's playing right now are Chicago's rookie Matt Forte and Atlanta's Michael Turner. Both of these defenses will have their hands full containing them, but Chicago is simply a more dominant squad right while also sporting a more talented offense.
  • Detroit Lions (0-4) at Minnesota Vikings (2-3): FOX, 1pm EST - It's been eleven years since Detroit last won in Minnesota. They might need to start Drew Stanton, their second-round draft pick in 2007, at QB due to injuries to Jon Kitna and the great Dan Orlovsky. Their 30th-ranked rush defense gets to face the lethal Adrian Peterson. Hide the kids.
  • Carolina Panthers (4-1) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2): FOX, 1pm EST - This is great smash-mouth battle between two divisional foes who each sport very effective running tandems. Tampa was clicking on all cylinders with Brian Griese at QB, but he has a right elbow injury. If he can't go, then the reins will go to Jeff Garcia who will be facing a rejuvenated DE Julius Peppers and Carolina defense.
  • St. Louis Rams (0-4) at Washington Redskins (4-1): FOX, 1pm EST- Former Saints head coach Jim Haslett takes over the helm of the woeful Rams, and he just might be what this team needs to begin a turn around. But, don't plan on it meaning a W in the nation's capitol. Washington is 20-7-1 vs. the Rams in franchise history and has yet to have a turnover this season.
  • Baltimore Ravens (2-2) at Indianapolis Colts (2-2): CBS, 1pm EST - What is wrong with Peyton Manning? His mobility appears to be back but his chemistry with his receivers is very unstable right now. This will have to improve vs. the league's #1 ranked secondary and pass rush. Indy has yet to win a game in their new home, Lucas Oil Field, but coach Tony Dungy is 4-0 vs. Baltimore.
  • Oakland Raiders (1-3) at New Orleans Saints (2-3): CBS, 1pm EST - The Lane Kiffin death watch is now over after the 120-year old Al Davis fired him and tore him down as a man. New head coach Tom Cable looks like John Goodman and will have his hands full facing a Saints team that is not too happy about their loss to Minnesota last Monday night despite a career day for Reggie Bush. It will be interesting to see how long Cable lasts under the crypt keeper owner.
  • Cincinnati Bengals (0-5) at NY Jets (2-2): CBS, 1pm EST - This could be a massacre which the Jets are used to after Brett Favre's 6-TD performance two weeks ago vs. Arizona. Favre should pick up where he left off vs. a Cincy team that is very unstable right now especially with Carson Palmer out and the young Ryan Fitzpatrick in. Marvin Lewis appears to be on the hot seat, and a loss to the Jets could be his ticket to the unemployment line.
  • Miami Dolphins (2-2) at Houston Texans (0-4): CBS, 1pm EST - These are actually two pretty evenly-matched teams on both sides of the ball except for rushing defense where Houston is 26th. Facing Miami's 10th-ranked rushing attack will be a challenge for these winless Texans. The Dolphins are turning heads with their performance the last two weeks and have never beaten Houston. They're due.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3) at Denver Broncos (4-1): CBS, 4:05pm EST - Each team is packed with enough firepower to light up the sky offensively, but their defenses are struggling big time. Both squads will probably come out quick and fast to see whose defense wears down the fastest. Jacksonville has won the last three meetings vs. Denver.
  • Dallas Cowboys (4-1) at Arizona Cardinals (3-2): FOX, 4:15pm EST - After watching NFL football for over 30 years, I've come to realize that if you have a very porous and suspect secondary, you don't want to face someone like Kurt Warner and his lethal arsenal. Due to injuries, poor play, and Pacman's possible suspension, the elements are there for a good ole fashioned desert sunburn.
  • Philadelphia Eagles (2-3) at San Francisco 49ers (2-3): FOX, 4:15pm EST - The game plan is real simple for Philadelphia. If they want to avoid compiling a three game losing streak for the season and on the road, their defense must rise up and play their hearts out. QB J.T. O'Sullivan must feel the heat all day long while RB Frank Gore is grounded. If neither happen, it's going to be one long flight home across the country.
  • Green Bay Packers (2-3) at Seattle Seahawks (1-3): FOX, 4:15pm EST - When was the last time you saw these two teams play each other and they both had losing records? Both have fallen on hard times the last three weeks, and each desperately needs a win in order to not lose ground in their divisions. Both defenses know how to give up points so this just might be a high-scoring affair.
  • New England Patriots (3-1) at San Diego Chargers (2-3): NBC, 8:15pm EST, Sunday Night - Speaking of losing ground in divisions. These two teams are always a joy to watch regardless of their records, but they both are struggling this season to maintain momentum. Regardless, when you have weapons like Randy Moss and LaDainian Tomlinson on the field, you have a recipe for one entertaining battle.
  • NY Giants (4-0) at Cleveland Browns (1-3): ESPN, 8:30pm EST, MNF - Emergency crews are standing by.

NFL 2008 Week 5 Picks

James Earl Jones. J.K. Simmons. Steven Hill. Bill Daily. Dennis Farina. Steve Buscemi. Chris Cooper.

Character actors are why I watch certain movies and TV shows. They are usually hard-wired with an impeccable sense of humor, a unique and recognizable voice, and a look that pierces the screen with laser sharp precision.

There's another trait about this tier of high-quality character actors: They don't disappoint.

The National Football League doesn't disappoint.

It's a breathing, pulsating entity that is comprised of many different elements while appealing to just about any fan out there. Yes, there are athletes being shot, busted for drugs, and who have a wide variety of character issues. Their persona flirts on the fence line between football and Hollywood to the point of being type-cast as a cancer to the team. But, there are others who exemplify true character, are defined by a plumb line in their life, and are as solid as oak.

Together, they participate in turf battles every Sunday of the season; wars that produces excitement and thrills on a continuous basis. Every single Sunday, you know that you can expect one thing to occur without fail: Incalculable events that leave you breathless.

The nature of this league also bleeds into the work week and peppers us with unexpected events in the form of injuries, firings, cuts, and vocal outbursts that turn into locker room fodder; all of which adds spice to the upcoming games.

This past Sunday and week reflected this phenomenon delightfully.

Washington stunned the Cowboys in Texas Stadium. Denver fell to the lowly Chiefs. Chicago shocked Philly. San Diego overcame a 15-0 deficit to obliterate Oakland leading to Lane Kiffin's firing by crusty, senile Al Davis. In the same fashion, St. Louis built a lead on Buffalo only to be crushed at home and kicking coach Scott Linehan to the curb.

Terrell Owens became vocal about wanting the ball more which is a good thing and nothing new despite the media's infatuation with covering the story. Bengals WR Chad Johnson said in an interview that he loves Dallas and that Jerry Jones should give him a call. He also said that if he scores a TD against Dallas that he's going to kiss the star on the field. I'm sure that will sit well with the Bengals and their fans.

In looking at Week 5, there's still no sign of discontentment.

  • Kansas City Chiefs (1-3) at Carolina Panthers (3-1): CBS, 1pm EST - According to Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards, his players had begun to doubt themselves. "They were questioning their talent. You can't question that. The way you overcome that, you've got to just keep playing. Just play with energy. Just keep going fast. Just keep playing hard." Well, that seemed to help as they overcame the 3-0 Broncos and now must face a Carolina team whose offense exploded last week with over 400 yards and is 2-0 at home.
  • San Diego Chargers (2-2) at Miami Dolphins (1-2): CBS, 1pm EST - Yes, I know Tom Brady is out for the year. But, that annihilation of New England at home by Miami two weeks ago said more about Miami than the Brady-less Bunch. The Dolphins torched the Patriots behind RB Ronnie Brown's 5-TD performance. San Diego poses a serious threat to bring Miami down to earth behind a hot L.T.
  • Tennessee Titans (4-0) at Baltimore Ravens (2-1): CBS, 1pm EST - This contest is dripping with signs of it being an all-out war. If you like good old-fashioned smash mouth football, then you will not want to miss this game. Both defenses are asphyxiating, and each offense has a rushing attack that will flip defenses inside-out. Coach Jeff Fisher is doing an unfathomable job this season.
  • Indianapolis Colts (1-2) at Houston Texans (0-3): CBS, 1pm EST - There's no beating around the bush here. Indy has not been playing well on both sides of the ball especially Peyton Manning. But, this team has resolve, is coming off a bye, and is 5-1 at Reliant Stadium which is finally ready after being damaged by Ike. The problem is that Houston just might not be ready for Indy.
  • Chicago Bears (2-2) at Detroit Lions (0-3): FOX, 1pm EST - Removing Millen last week was a move that was about 5 years too late, but now that it's done, the Lions are finally able to breathe a little better as the black cloud begins to leave. Just not this week.
  • Atlanta Falcons (2-2) at Green Bay Packers (2-2): FOX, 1pm EST - If Aaron Rodgers is going to fill Brett Favre's shoes successfully and ease the sting felt by the Packers faithful of losing a legend, he needs to start this Sunday against Atlanta. Rodgers sprained his throwing shoulder last week and has every intention of starting in true Favre-like fashion. He better succeed considering his back-up has never played in an NFL game. Atlanta rookie QB Matt Ryan has yet to win a road game, and I don't see Lambeau being the first.
  • Seattle Seahawks (1-2) at NY Giants (3-0): FOX, 1pm EST - I'm convinced that if you were to whisper in the ear of Giants WR Plaxico Burress, you would hear an echo. He's talented yet hollow-headed as he continues to find ways to be suspended by the Giants for conduct detrimental to the team. His absence allows Seattle to put an extra man on the run while the 'Hawks are #2 in rushing offense and are getting back two WR's from injuries to finally bolster their arsenal.
  • Washington Redskins (3-1) at Philadelphia Eagles (2-2): FOX, 1pm EST - It's not too often that a game in Week 5 is considered a "must win", but Philly should be targeting this all-out brawl with the Redskins as just that. Two losses to two divisional opponents before Week 5 doesn't sit well. Philly's defense leads the league in sacks and must put intense pressure on Jason Campbell who has yet to throw an interception this season. Washington's defense is hurting.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1) at Denver Broncos (3-1): FOX, 4:05pm EST - Both teams had emotional games last week. Denver's spirit and momentum took a hit in KC falling to the Chiefs while the Bucs beat the Packers on the leg of K Matt Bryant who buried his infant son a few days prior. QB Brian Griese was drafted by Denver so he'll face his second former team this year. Tampa needs to protect the football and avoid turnovers facing the league's #1 offense, and they are 17-0 since 2002 when they don't turn the ball over.
  • Buffalo Bills (4-0) at Arizona Cardinals (2-2): CBS, 4:15pm EST - Should Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt be concerned? The last two victories by Buffalo were against Oakland and St. Louis who ended up firing their their head coaches this past week. These two teams are pretty even in the rankings on both sides of the ball. It will come down to who wins the turnover battle and can control the clock.
  • New England Patriots (2-1) at San Francisco 49ers (2-2): CBS, 4:15pm EST - When the 2008 NFL schedule came out, Patriot fans probably doubled over and rolled on the floor laughing while Niners fans rolled their eyes and went ahead and wrote an "L" beside this date. Oh, how a torn ACL can change things. Now, the Patriots stroll into San Fran with a 28th-ranked offense and 21st-ranked defense to face a 49ers team that is clicking on offense. The ingredients are there for a huge upset.
  • Cincinnati Bengals (0-4) at Dallas Cowboys (3-1): CBS, 4:15pm EST - Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens on the same field. Stop and let it sink in. Dallas is not happy after that home loss to the Skins, and Cincy has nothing going for them except #85 who is due for a break out game vs. a leaking Cowboys secondary. This Bengals team almost beat the Giants at home so Dallas cannot let their guard down. They must pressure Carson Palmer and create turnovers which they have struggled to do this season. This will be fun to watch...trust me.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers (3-1) at Jacksonville Jaguars (2-2): NBC, 8:15pm EST, Sunday Night - There's no sense in beating around the bush here. Jacksonville has Pittsburgh's number having dominated them the last four meetings winning the last three. And, they are catching them at a really good time with Ben Roethlisberger suffering through a really bad shoulder and operating behind a battered line. Pittsburgh's running game has been defused due to many injuries so Jacksonville can concentrate on the passing game.
  • Minnesota Vikings (1-3) at New Orleans Saints (2-2): ESPN, 8:30pm EST, MNF - Whenever RB Adrian Peterson comes to town, the game plan for opposing defensive coordinators is pretty simple: Stop A.P. It won't be much different this time as the Vikings come to New Orleans desperately needing a win. This Saints offense is 3rd in the league and will be even more dangerous now that Deuce McAllister is healthy and seeing more carries. Minnesota has won six of the last seven meetings.
